On a freshly painted red wall we were going to hang a variety of black & white photos of our favorite recording artists. Joe quickly printed some 5×7s of Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, Lou Reed, Neal Young.  Next were some prints of our favorite movies – Moonstruck, The Kid, When Harry Met Sally, to name a few.

When you take a step back, you might see  a landscape of copyright infringement. But, fortunately I know that those photos were for our own personal use and well within the bounds of the fair use doctrine of the copyright law.  Those single copies would only be privately displayed on our family room wall.

But what if some friends came over, liked what they saw and suggested that Joe go into business creating framed media art?  Well, we’d need to explain the intricacies of licensing copyrighted images for commercial gain.

So glad that we can rest in the assurance that those images were for our own personal use. They really look terrific.
